Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH)
Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis is the inflammatory, cell-injuring form of metabolic steatotic liver disease. It combines liver fat with inflammation and hepatocyte damage and may progress to fibrosis, cirrhosis or liver cancer. MASH replaces the older name NASH, and confirming it can still require liver biopsy when non-invasive tests are inconclusive.
