Major networks, websites and equipment makers permanently enabled IPv6 to expand address capacity beyond IPv4.
IPv4 provides roughly 4.3 billion unique addresses, a limit strained by computers, phones and connected devices. IPv6 supplies a vastly larger space. The 2012 launch was a deployment milestone rather than the protocol’s invention, and adoption has remained gradual and uneven.
