False Positive Rate

The share of negative cases that a system incorrectly classifies as positive. In a detection system, it measures how often ordinary objects or harmless events are wrongly flagged as targets or threats.

Fast Radio Burst

A brief, powerful burst of radio waves from a distant astronomical source.

Fault-Tolerant Logical Qubit

A logical qubit encoded across multiple physical qubits so that errors can be detected and corrected during computation.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation(FMT)

The transfer of screened intestinal microorganisms from a donor to a recipient to modify the gut microbiome.

Few-Shot Learning

A machine-learning setting in which a model must recognize a new class or task after seeing only a small number of labelled examples.

Finite Element Analysis(FEA)

A numerical simulation method that divides a complex object into many small elements to estimate how it will respond to forces, heat, vibration or other physical conditions.

Finite-Time Singularity

A mathematical breakdown in which a quantity such as fluid velocity or its derivatives becomes unbounded after a finite interval, even though the initial data were smooth.

Firm Low-Carbon Power

Electricity from a low-carbon source that can provide dependable output when required, rather than only when weather conditions permit. Nuclear, geothermal, hydro and generation paired with sufficient storage can supply varying forms of firm power.

First Amendment Retaliation

Government punishment imposed because a person or organization engaged in speech protected by the U.S. Constitution.

Forced Vital Capacity(FVC)

The maximum volume of air a person can forcefully exhale after taking the deepest possible breath. Clinicians use it to assess and follow lung diseases, but a change in forced vital capacity does not by itself reveal why lung function changed.

Forecast Lead Time

The interval between the time a forecast is issued or initialized and the future time for which it predicts conditions.

Forecast Skill Horizon

The lead time at which a forecast stops performing better than a chosen reference, such as climatology or persistence. The horizon depends on the weather variable, location, spatial scale, time averaging and the metric used to define useful skill.

Formal Verification

The use of a precisely specified logical system and software to check that every step of a proof or program follows from declared assumptions and rules.

Foundation Model

An AI model trained on a broad dataset so it can be adapted to several narrower tasks instead of being built separately for each one.

FP16(FP16)

A numerical format that stores floating-point values in 16 bits. AI systems often use it to reduce memory and increase calculation speed, though peak FP16 performance does not measure every workload equally.

Frame Rate(fps)

The number of individual images displayed, captured, or generated per second in video, animation, or interactive graphics, commonly measured in frames per second. Higher rates can make motion appear smoother but require more processing or bandwidth.

Free-Space Optical Link(FSO)

A communication link that sends light directly through air or space instead of guiding it through an optical fibre. Its performance depends on line of sight, alignment, weather, atmospheric turbulence and background light.

FtsZ

A bacterial protein that forms dynamic filaments and assembles into a ring near the future division site. Researchers study FtsZ both to understand bacterial cell division and to build division machinery for minimal synthetic cells.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy(fNIRS)

A wearable brain-imaging technique that uses near-infrared light to measure oxygen levels in the outer layer of the brain, letting researchers track prefrontal activity while a person moves and talks normally, unlike bulkier scanners such as fMRI.

Fusion Fuel Cycle

The system for supplying, recovering, separating and reusing fuel isotopes in a fusion reactor.

Futility Boundary

A statistical threshold indicating that a clinical trial is unlikely to demonstrate its intended benefit even if enrollment or follow-up continues as planned.

Future-State Prediction

Future-state prediction is the estimation of a system's likely physical or computational state at a later moment using its recent observations, actions, and dynamics, allowing decisions to target where the system is expected to be.

Galileo

Galileo is the European Union's global satellite navigation system. It provides civilian positioning, navigation and timing services and can be used alongside GPS and other GNSS constellations in compatible receivers.

Game Preservation

The technical and archival work used to keep video games playable, studyable, and recoverable as hardware, software platforms, storage media, and online services change.

Gas-Diffusion Electrode

A porous electrode designed to bring a gas, liquid electrolyte and electrically active surface into contact so that gas-involving electrochemical reactions can proceed efficiently.

Gene Editing

Gene editing is the deliberate alteration of DNA at a specific location in a genome. Depending on the method, it can remove, disable, replace, or rewrite genetic sequences, allowing researchers to study gene function and potentially correct disease-causing mutations.

General-Purpose AI Model(GPAI)

An AI model capable of performing a broad range of tasks and being integrated into many downstream systems. Under the EU AI Act, its provider has documentation, copyright and transparency duties, with additional obligations when the model may pose systemic risk.
