Somatic mosaicism
Somatic mosaicism is the presence of two or more genetically distinct populations of body cells that developed from the same fertilized egg. It arises when a DNA change occurs after conception and is passed to only the descendant cells of the affected cell. The timing and tissue distribution of the change determine how many cells carry it and whether it has a detectable effect.
