NASA's Roman Telescope Begins Its Journey
NASA's Roman Space Telescope has launched toward a distant operating point where its panoramic infrared camera is designed to survey more than two billion galaxies and search for thousands of exoplanets. Its wide field should complement the more targeted observations of Hubble and Webb. But launch is only the first milestone. Roman must reach its destination, deploy, cool and calibrate its instruments before science observations are expected to begin in early 2027.

A Personalized mRNA Cancer Trial Is Stopped
BioNTech and Genentech ended a Phase 2 trial of a personalized mRNA treatment for people at high risk of colorectal cancer returning. An independent board found an overall-survival imbalance and judged further study unlikely to change the efficacy result. The companies have not disclosed the number of deaths, the direction or reliability of the imbalance, and the board reported no new treatment-related safety signal. The finding applies to this monotherapy study, not all mRNA cancer vaccines.

Coral Bleaching Is Outpacing Reef Recovery
The largest global coral assessment yet says mass bleaching now returns every five to six years, leaving many reefs too little time to recover. More than 87,000 surveys show global hard-coral cover in 2020 to 2024 was about 9.5% below its historical reference average. Outcomes differ sharply by region, and coral cover alone cannot describe an entire ecosystem. Still, repeated marine heatwaves are shortening the rebuilding interval between major bleaching events.

Europe Contracts a Major AI Computing Expansion
EuroHPC has signed a €387.8 million contract for LUMI-AI, a Finnish supercomputer planned for 2027. The public system is intended to give startups, smaller companies and researchers shared access to AI training, inference and scientific simulation. Its builders target ten times the current LUMI system's AI capacity and plan to reuse waste heat. However, the final accelerator count, total power demand and measured performance have not been published, so the claimed upgrade remains a target.

Engineered tRNA Restores Protein in Cystic-Fibrosis Models
Researchers redesigned transfer RNA to bypass premature genetic stop signals and restore production of the CFTR protein missing in some forms of cystic fibrosis. Combined with lung-targeted lipid nanoparticles, the approach worked in human airway cells, mice and patient-derived organoids. It also complemented an existing drug in one organoid model. No patient has received the treatment, and researchers still need to establish safe repeat dosing, durability, immune effects and accurate recognition of mistaken rather than natural stop signals.

A Tunnelling Transistor Switches at Lower Voltage
Researchers built an atomically thin transistor that switched across a 160-millivolt gate range at room temperature while maintaining useful current. Instead of pushing electrons over an energy barrier, the device uses quantum tunnelling through one, potentially allowing lower-voltage logic. The result addresses a longstanding trade-off in experimental tunnelling transistors. It remains a single laboratory device, with no complete circuit, production yield, lifetime data or measured energy saving in a working chip.
