Technology term
Tokamak
A tokamak is a fusion-research device that uses magnetic fields to confine hot, electrically charged plasma in a doughnut-shaped chamber. External magnetic coils and a current flowing through the plasma together shape the confining field. The aim is to maintain conditions in which light atomic nuclei can fuse. A tokamak is one approach to magnetic confinement, distinct from compressing a tiny fuel capsule with intense laser pulses. Operating a tokamak does not by itself mean that a facility produces net electricity.
