Why Can Milliseconds Matter in Financial Markets?

In automated markets, a millisecond can determine which order sees new information or reaches a matching engine first. Speed can improve execution, but it is costly, unevenly distributed and no substitute for sound models or risk controls.

What latency includes

Why order matters

Suppose a venue has a limited quantity offered at the best price. Several buyers respond, but the matching engine can fill only the earliest eligible orders. Later orders may receive nothing or trade at a worse price. A fast market maker can also update stale quotes before another trader accepts them after prices move elsewhere.

How firms reduce delay

  • Place servers near exchange infrastructure through colocation.
  • Use direct or normalized high-speed market-data feeds.
  • Choose low-latency fibre, microwave or other network routes.
  • Optimize software, hardware and data serialization.
  • Perform pre-trade risk checks without unnecessary processing.

Each optimization has engineering, access and compliance costs. Physical distance still matters because signals cannot travel faster than light.

Premium feeds and fairness

Exchanges may sell faster, richer or more direct data while also publishing consolidated feeds. The policy question is not simply whether one product is faster, but whether access terms are transparent, broadly available on equal commercial terms and consistent with market rules. Small timing differences can compound when automated systems consume them.

Speed is not the strategy

A fast system can act quickly on a bad signal. Profitable trading also requires forecasting, cost estimation, capital, inventory management and controls for erroneous orders. Competition can erase an advantage, and faster reaction may amplify feedback during volatile markets. Kill switches, position limits and monitoring remain essential.

Reality check

Milliseconds do not matter equally to every investor. Long-term investment decisions are rarely improved by shaving network delay. The value concentrates in market making, arbitrage, execution and other activities where prices or queue positions change rapidly. A headline about speed should identify the market, feed, route and trading function involved.

How to evaluate a speed claim

Ask where the clock starts and stops, whether the figure is an average or percentile, and whether both parties had comparable access. Then ask whether faster data produced better execution after fees, adverse selection and failed trades. Technical latency is measurable; its economic value depends on context.
