How AI-Assisted HPV Screening Can Triage Cervical Cancer Risk

An evergreen guide to how self-sampling, HPV genotyping, portable imaging, AI-assisted evaluation and biopsy confirmation fit into one screening pathway.

Cervical cancer screening increasingly separates the first test from the decision about who needs urgent follow-up. A self-collected sample can detect high-risk human papillomavirus, while extended genotyping identifies which viral types are present. Because different HPV types carry different levels of cancer risk, this result helps establish a first layer of triage.

For people with a positive HPV result, a portable colposcope can capture images of the cervix. Computer-vision software may classify those images by the severity of visible abnormalities. The image score and HPV type can then be considered together to prioritize referral, biopsy or treatment.

This workflow is not autonomous diagnosis. Image quality, local disease prevalence, clinician training and device maintenance can affect performance. Biopsy and pathology remain important for confirming high-grade lesions, and screening programs need clear procedures for follow-up, safety monitoring and quality assurance.

The potential benefit is operational. Combining self-sampling, rapid testing and image analysis may reduce repeat visits and help clinics direct scarce specialist capacity toward people at greatest risk. Prospective implementation studies are still needed to show whether these gains translate into fewer missed lesions, lower costs and reduced cervical-cancer incidence.
