What the researchers found

What p-tau181 means

Phosphorylated tau 181 (p-tau181) is a modified form of the tau protein that can be measured in blood. Higher levels can be associated with Alzheimer’s-related changes, although a single result is not enough to diagnose the disease.

The finding raises the possibility that unusually long sleep could serve as an early warning signal in some older adults. It does not mean that everyone who naturally sleeps nine or ten hours is developing dementia.

Why longer sleep might be linked to brain changes

One possibility is that early neurodegeneration changes the systems that regulate sleep, causing people to spend more time asleep or in bed before obvious memory symptoms appear.

Another possibility is that reported long sleep reflects poor-quality or fragmented sleep. A person may remain in bed for ten hours while getting much less restorative sleep because of repeated waking, breathing problems, pain or another condition.

Before we overstate the result

Should people deliberately sleep less?

No. The study does not support cutting necessary sleep or setting an alarm simply to remain below a particular number. Restricting sleep could create other health problems and would not address an underlying disorder.

A more useful response is to notice a persistent change. Someone who suddenly needs much more sleep, remains exhausted after a long night or develops memory and thinking difficulties should discuss the pattern with a healthcare professional.

What happens next

Future studies need objective sleep measurements, repeated biomarker tests and long-term follow-up to determine whether long sleep predicts later cognitive decline or mainly reflects changes already underway.

For now, the study makes long sleep a potentially useful clue, not a diagnosis and not a cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
